Day 1Airport (Tbilisi)-Tbilisi Arrive in Tbilisi
Meet at the airport and transfer to Tbilisi. Overnight at a hotel in Tbilisi.
Today we will explore the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi. Wonder in the old districts of the city which are structured like terraces, as well as take a walk in the narrow streets to enjoy colorful houses, patterned balconies and wonderful samples of modern architecture. We will start the tour from Metekhi church (13th century) facing the magnificent views over old Tbilisi. A stroll along winding little streets takes us to the main sights of the city. Afterwards take cable cars up to the ancient Narikala fortress (4th century) to enjoy the panoramic views of the whole town and then walk down to the historical domed sulphur bath area- connected with the name of our city. Then take funicular tram up to Mtatsminda Park and enjoy best views over the city. Some free time. Overnight at a hotel in Tbilisi.
We drive to visit the ancient capital and religious centre of Georgia – Mtskheta (3000 years old) and see its historical places: Jvari church (6th century) animpressive Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) where the Robe of Christ is buried. Both Jvari and Svetitskhoveli are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Continue to Borjomi spa town, famous with its mineral water "Borjomi". Visit the park and taste mineral water. Arrive in Bakuriani ski resort for overnight. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Bakuriani.
In the morning we travel to Vardzia. On the way visit Khertvisi fortress (10th century). The magnificent cave town – Vardzia (12th century) is one of the highlights of the trip. It stretches over half a kilometer along the river Mtkvari and has 19 tiers. There used to be about 3000 caves. It has got a church hewn out in rock with amazing 12th century frescos. The complex also includes dwellings quarters, small hall-type churches, refectories, wine cellars, pharmacy, etc. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Bakuriani.
In the morning we will visit the town of Gori and its historical place: Uplistsikhe Cave Town (1st millennium BC). Uplistsikhe is the place where the Great Silk Road used to pass. This is an old and interesting complex with dwelling quarters, wine-cellars, bakeries, a three-nave basilica church hewn out in rock and even an antic theatre. Afterwards drive up the famous Georgian Military Highway (leading to the Georgian-Russian border). On the way visit Ananuri architectural complex (17th century), the two churches and the fortress overlook the Zhinvali water reservoir. The carvings on the churches are one of the best samples of the Georgian art. The drive is very scenic through high Caucasus Mountains. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Gudauri ski resort (2200 m.).
A stunning drive from Gudauri along the Tergi River will bring us to Kazbegi – the main town in the region. Weather permitting you may catch a glimpse of one of the highest glaciers in the Caucasus – Mt Kazbegi (5047m). Drive back to Tbilisi. Overnight at a hotel in Tbilisi. (B/-/-) *NOTE: In Kazbegi there is possibility to hire local 4WD and drive up through beautiful valleys and woodland till Gergeti Trinity Church located at 2170m, from where is great view of the surrounded Caucasus mountains.
Day 7Tbilisi-Airport (Tbilisi)
Transfer to the airport and departure.
